Progress

Fucking Progress by funkychorlton

The bastard child of two other compositions and employing at least four distinct compositional procedures. The piece is originally derived from samples I made while conducting the chamber instrumentalists from the Raise Your Voice Ensemble in preparation for the premiere of my composition Gesticulations 1 in April 2010. These samples were transformed on the computer with Max MSP/Catart and combined with other orchestral recordings and some recordings of steam trains and analogue synthesizers to create an acousmatic composition which was premiered in an 8 channel diffusion at Manchester University. A famous volcanic dust cloud which meant I couldn’t actually attend this premier but it did give me the opportunity to present the sampled material (by now further reassembled into the form of an Audio Graphic Score) to a group of soloists in Berlin: Adam Linson, Gustavo Aguilar and Hilary Jeffry. The resulting piece draws from their improvisations, the acousmatic composition and the original sampled material together into a quasi orchestral/chamber composition.

Richard Scott – composition
Hilary Jeffery – trombone
Adam Linson – contrabass
Gustavo Aguilar – percussion
Christopher Swithenbank – cello
Rob Guy – viola
Christopher Jones – violin
Jenny Dyson – flute
Jon Guy – clarinet
